An estate planning client once expressed to me with excitement, and upon completion of their estate planning consultation, that there was a great sense of accomplishment and relief in having engaged in such serious “adulting,” and to have answered some of life’s more challenging questions.
What is Adulting?
It’s true, estate planning is a major adulting activity. Do not confuse with with “adultery.” Adulting is a relatively new (fake/slang) word defined by Urban Dictionary as (verb) “to carry out one or more of the duties and responsibilities expected of fully developed individuals (paying off that credit card debt, settling beef without blasting social media, etc.).” https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Adulting
Why is Estate Planning Adulting?
Estate planning is the act of preparing for the transfer of a person’s wealth and assets after his or her death. It usually involves much more than just “who gets what.” There is also usually planning for one’s future care upon mental incapacity or physically disability by nominating someone to make decisions about important financial and medical matters. For parents of minor children, planning also means selecting legal guardians for children and reaching an understanding as to their personal care, maintenance and survival without their parents.
To begin with the end in mind means the first step to ‘adulting’ is finishing your estate plan.
It’s true that taking responsibility for yourself and your loved ones creates a sense of empowerment. We, the living, all have a reason to plan for the future. Even if one does not have a family to take care of, there is still a need to plan to take care of oneself.
